One hot Texas summer night, I slept in my bed, minding my own business when WHAM! out of nowhere I was stung in the forearm by a scorpion! In my own bed!

All sorts of chaos ensued, and I was then petrified to lay in my bed again that night. My husband joked, “Well, what are the chances of getting stung twice in one night? That’s like getting struck by lightning twice!” Still paranoid, I managed to fall asleep that night and this shawl was born shortly thereafter!

When I saw the “scorpion” motif in Barbara Walker’s stitch dictionary, I knew it needed to become a shawl!

Measurements
Depth: 45” (114 cm)
Length Along Top Edge: 88” (224 cm)

Yarn:
Vintage Chunky by Berroco (52% Acrylic, 40% Wool, 8% Nylon; 3.5 oz 100 g; 131 yds 120 m; Bulky Weight) In
C1: Mochi (6101) - 4 skeins (Approx 390 g (13.8 oz); 510 yds (466 m)
C2: Indigo (61182) - 2 skeins (Approx. 153 g (5.4 oz); 200 yds (183 m)
C3: Pumpkin (6176) - 2 skeins (Approx.  155 g  (5.5 oz); 205 yds (187 m)

Needles:
US 11 (8.00 mm) and US 13 (9.0 mm) circular needle, or size to obtain gauge at least 40” (102 cm) long

Notions:
Tapestry needle, stitch markers (4 unique markers, and 10 additional markers)

Gauge:
9 sts / 16 rows = 4” / 10 cm in Stockinette Stitch using smaller needles (US 11 8.00 mm) after a light blocking)
Exact gauge is not critical, but because the shawl requires nearly the entire yardage of each color, deviation from the gauge will affect the size of the shawl and yarn requirements.

Techniques Used:
Garter tab cast-on, standard increases/decreases, bobbles, and mosaic colorwork.

Additional Notes:

  • Pattern is written out and was professionally technical edited by knit3together, and test knit by AmyF, Flatrockfilly65, mamacass, Blueskysah, craftygal12991, erinokane. Thank you so much for your help!
  • The pattern is written out, but the colorwork is only charted.
  • The sample shown in the main photos used a slightly different mosaic chart than in the final version of the pattern -- it was reduced by a couple of stitches to ensure knitters won’t have to plain a game of “yarn chicken” at the end. To see the minor change, please see project photos.
