Shallow Waters Stole
About the pattern
‘Shallow Waters’ is a classic rectangular stole or wrap with tapered corners. It is knit from the short side in garter on the bias with constant stitch count (bias created with symmetric increases and decreases).
It is decorated with mosaic (slip stitch) colorwork print, that resembles gentle ripples on the surface of a pond, which gave the stole its name.
This stole is part of a collection, including a beanie, mittens (to be published on New Year’s Eve) and a rectangular stole.
The pattern is written for basic option of print in a contrast color, but gives you hints and tips on how you can change the color scheme of the stole - also see Schematic & Color-blocking Options in pattern photos.
The pattern is calculated for 3 yarn-weights: DK, sport and sock, so that you can choose the most appropriate version for your climate and taste. If you wish, you can use a different yarn weight and apply the pattern modification tips to get the size you want with it.
Size
Approximate finished size (tip to tip) is ~220 * 50-55 cm/ 85 * 20”, but exact size will depend on your individual gauge, applied modifications and how hard you block it.
Yarn
Pick 2 (or more) yarns in contrasting colors in the same weight within sock to DK range (180-450m/200-500 yds per 100g/3.5oz). It is best to choose soft yarns with little halo in solid/ tonal color, or a long gradient (see sample photo) to best show off the print. The sample was knit out of:
• Main color (MC) – 2 balls of Laines du Nord Poema (100% wool; 600m/150g) colorway 104 ‘Colibri’
• Contrast color (CC) – Lanecardate Canberra (100% merino; 775m/100g, held double)
Needles
3-4.5 mm / US 2.5-7, depending on the selected yarn weight, on a 60-80cm/24-32” cable
Notions stitch markers (optional), row counter (optional), tapestry needle, scissors.
