Souvenir
You say you are on the road near a fiber festival or on a yarn crawl? Your tote bag is full of interesting yarn you got as a remembrance of your trip, but you only picked up single skeins? AND you need something simple to knit while your partner in crime is handling driving duty?
Make yourself a Souvenir!
Souvenir is a simple, reversible shawl intended to show off gradient yarns, as well as be an easily worked project for social or public knitting. It is suitable for advanced beginner knitters.
And because there’s (almost) nothing worse than not being able to use the whole darn skein of special yarn, Souvenir is absolutely scalable so you can knit until you have just enough yarn left to bind off. Notes are included in the pattern to this end.
Yarn: sample was knit in Alexandra’s Crafts Bling Bling Sister in a bullseye colorway. Any gradient, striping or variegated yarn will work. Choose your favorite from your LYS or fiber festival and let the colors shine. Sample was knit using a single 100g/436 yard ball. If you have more yarn, you can keep knitting to use it up and make a larger shawl.
Gauge: 22 sts and 24 rows = 4” in garter stitch UNBLOCKED. This is a loose gauge for fingering weight yarn. Gauge isn’t critical for this project, but will affect the yardage used. If you like a tighter knit, use a smaller needle. Working to a different gauge will affect the final size of the finished piece.
Needle: US7 (4.5 mm), 24” or longer circular needle. A circular needle is used to accommodate large number of stitches; piece is worked flat.
Skills needed: Cast on, knit, purl, yarn over, k2tog, bind off, kfb (knit in front and back of single stitch)
Finished size: Sample was 36/29/28 inches along the 3 sides before blocking. After blocking, it was 53/36/48. Your finished size will be determined by your gauge, yardage used and aggressiveness of blocking.
