Just where they turn and retreat again, the waves leave a line of sea foam, sometimes like a slender string of pearls and sometimes large and thick. Here I have drawn a pattern in knit and purl stitches that flows down over the leg of the sock – a small tribute to the Eriskay sweaters and elegant in all its simplicity. Lillemor Elfgren had dyed the perfect colour, like that left by the sea as the waves retreat over the sands of the West Beach on Berneray.

Method: the socks are worked from the cuff down with a textured pattern and a heel reinforced with sostes. Note that the instructions are written for a set of 5 DPNs.

SIZE: ADULT Yarn quantities: 80g/2¾oz (for size 42/UK 8/US Women’s 10, US Men’s 9) and a reinforced heel with slipped stitches.

Yarn: Sock yarn from Limmo Design, 100g/3½oz/420m/460yds

Finished measurements: 19cm (7½in) leg length, 9cm (3½in) leg width, foot length to suit yourself

Shade: Seafoam

Needles: 2mm (UK 14, US 0) DPNs for ribbing, stocking (stockinette) stitch areas and heel, 2.25mm (UK 13, US 1)

DPNs for pattern

Tension (gauge): 30 sts × 46 rows in stocking (stockinette) stitch on 2mm (UK 14, US 0) needles = 10 × 10cm (4 × 4in)

Other: spare yarn or stitch holders for setting stitches aside, darning needle for fastening off ends.
