Hap is more than just a project – it’s a labor of love that weaves together the threads of craftmanship, warmth, and our Estonian knitting history. Why this kind of name? Because I knitted my heart into this shawl and estonian double nupp looks like a heart. It’s a perfect gift for our family’s newborn baby. As you work through the intricate nupps and textures, you’ll be creating not just a blanket but a legacy, destined to be passed down through generations - an emotional creation that links the past with the present. The Südame Hap comes in two sizes and is worked seamlessly. This beautiful eye catcher is knitted from the center outwards, using the traditional square shape, with a center panel in a simple squishy garter stitch. The square is worked from one point of the diamond to the opposite point (knitted diagonally back and forth). You start by increasing the first half, and then you decrease for the second half. After that, stitches are picked up around the edges, and Estonian lace with double nupps diamonds is worked outwards from the center square and knitted in the round. Finally, the shawl is bound off with your favorite bind off method (I used Picot bind off.
Knit a pure white version for a christening, wich could become an elegant and beautiful family heirloom. Or use your favorite eye-catching and unexpected color combination, one color for central garter diamond and another color for lacy border.
Traditionally, this design is knitted without any sewing being necessary.

Two sizes are provided: M and S.
S-size is given only in instruction. Measurements and yardage not shown

The pattern includes written and charted instructions, tips and links to video tutorials and photographs. It has been totally tested and tech edited. You don’t have to print out the whole pattern. You can chose: charts or written instuction or some parts.

Size: Approx 120cm x 120cm (47“ x 47“) square

Needles: 4.00mm (US 6) for central diamond
and
4.50mm (US 7) 100cm/40“ circular needle

Note: My personal knitting tension is tight. If yours isn’t, consider using perhaps US 6 (4.00mm) needles for Lace part. Also, my back and forth knitting tension is significantly different than knitting in the round.

Gauge:
Central diamond: 17 stitches and 15 ridges (30 rows) per 10cm x 10cm / 4 x 4 inches in Garter Stitch on 4.00mm (US 6) needle (block your Garter Stitch swatch before measuring).
Lace part: 16 stitches x 26 rows per 10cm x 10cm /4 x 4 inches on 4.50mm (US 7) in Lace pattern after blocking.
Gauge is not crucial in this pattern, but differences may significantly affect yarn quantities and finished size.

Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scissors, 4 stitch markers, and a row counter is recommended and whichever tools you prefer to block your hap.

Yarn: Aade yarn (8/3), (100% wool, Natural), DK
100 gr (3.53 oz) - 267 m (292 yds),
Yarn hanks weigh between 150 gr/5.25 oz. – 300gr/10.5 oz. Aade is our local lambswool yarn.

My second sample is worked with Drops Kid-Silk.

approx. 2 skeins ( 420 gr / 14.8 oz - 1121 m / 1222 yds) Aade yarn colorway White
My patterned hap weighs exactly 420gr (Medium Size).

Techniques include: Knit, purl, picking up stitches, garter stitch, simple lace knitting (increases / decreses), double nupp, yarn over, Picot bind off.
