Long-striping yarns are beautiful, with coordinated colors in one skein yielding lovely segments of color without changing skeins. If you’ve succumbed to the temptation of a colorful yarn cake, here is a pattern that shows off all the colors at once in a scarf that is knit sideways. You will create stripes from end to end in an open stitch within a frame of garter stitch.

This pattern uses all but one peg of an afghan loom. The KB Super Afghan Loom (7/16” small gauge) was used here. The finished object after wet blocking is 78” long (6’6”) by 7.5” wide. Smaller sizes can be made by casting on fewer stitches (for a shorter scarf) or knitting fewer repeats (for a narrower scarf).

Skills: A knowledge of E-wrap knit and purl. Stitch sequence is based on these 2 stitches, along with use of half stitches along edges. Cable cast on, basic bind off.

Materials:

• an infinity or afghan loom. As the scarf is knit sideways, the number of pegs cast on will determine the length of the scarf. 197 pegs are used in the pattern.
• Long striping yarn. The color changes in the scarf are determined by the skein. More then one cake may be needed due to the amount of yardage in your chosen yarn, or if your yarn has an abrupt color change (such as a knotted join that interrupts the color scheme).
• Knitting tool, markers for the 5 pegs at each end, scissors, optional crochet hook for weaving in ends. Recommended: a marker indicating direction of knitting if you pause mid-row.
• This pattern is also suitable for solids, heathers and tweeds.
