Tenaya
Pattern update! Tenaya has been revamped. New charts, new written stitch instructions, EIGHT sizes (expanded from the original three sizes), updated text, new photos, new yarn, re-tech edited. Wow.
A tributary of the Merced River, Tenaya Creek starts high in the mountains at Tenaya Lake in Tuolumne Meadows, flows through the Tenaya Canyon and drops more than 1000 feet over the Pywiack Cascade into a valley far below Cloud’s Rest. Later it begins a more leisurely path, and widens into Mirror Lake at the base of Half Dome, before joining its waters with the Merced River in Yosemite Valley, California.
These finger-less mitts have rivulets of pattern running down the side of each hand. Knit exactly the same as each other, the mitts can be worn on either hand—there’s no confusion with making one for the right, and a different one for the left.
This is a companion pattern to the Merced sock pattern.
Model: Third from smallest size, which with this yarn and gauge equates to a women’s 7 inch hand.
Construction: Mitts are knit cuff to tips. Pattern written so that either DPNs or circular needles can be used.
Sizes: 4, 5.25, 6.5, 7.5 8.5, 9.5, 10.75, 11.5 inches; 10, 13.5, 16.5, 19 21.5, 24, 27.5, 29 cm.
Sizing: Mitts are designed with a bit of negative ease to help the fit and make the stitches show up better. Using a fabric measuring tape, measure your hand around the widest point. Knit the size that is closest to 1 inch smaller than that measurement.
Stitch instructions: charted and written.
Notions: 5 stitch markers, cable needle (optional), 2 pieces smooth fingering weight waste yarn in a contrasting color -- instructions for cable-needle-less cabling not included.
Skills: knit, purl, k2tog, ssk, p2tog, s2-k1-p2sso, 3-stitch cable, knitting in the round.
Difficulty: Easy-intermediate.
