The Castaway
The first pattern in my new self-published book, White Whale Vol. 1, patterns based on Moby-Dick.
“Bobbing up and down in the sea, Pip’s ebon head showed like a head of cloves.” (Moby-Dick, “The Castaway”)
This hat is modeled after Pip, the Pequod’s cabin boy who falls overboard and waits for the ship to pick him up, bobbing up and down in the vast emptiness of the sea.
Although it looks like bobbles, the texture pattern of the hat is worked in the round and does not require turning the work. It calls to mind both the creatures of the sea and the cabin boy’s head as he bobbed above them.
Worked in a soft, luxurious yarn, this project requires only one skein and about 30 yards of a second color for the accent stripes around the crown.
