This design is the result of sheer serendipity. Specifically, by the many links that brought it to life. All of them were inspired by memories and the evocative power of music.

It feels much like Virginia Woolf’s The Waves. Except for it not being that well written and the fact that there is way more yarn involved.

First Link Paula at Serafina Yarns posted on her instagram a picture of a beautiful skein of yarn. I saw it immediately transformed into a turtleneck sweater. This hardly ever happens to me. I never imagine finished garments in such detail just by looking at a skein. I know it happens to other designers, but not to me. For this design a mental picture came fully formed: a beautiful high neck, cables crossing the front as soft swaying knots, a sailor-inspired garment to remain ashore.

Second Link As I talked to Paula and discussed colors and ideas we got to know each other a little better. She explained to me that her husband is an oceanographer and spends long hours aboard a merchant marine, sailing the oceans in search of tiny pills of knowledge.�

Third Link I thought of the ocean and sailing a lot while knitting this sweater. In the background, little by little, some songs came back, memory awoken.

Basically, it sounded like one of my favorite records in the world: Emiliana Torrini’s “Fisherman’s Woman”. A record that I obsessively listened to twelve years ago when I met Miquel. It’s filled with memories of discovery and sheer happiness.

It is an album that speaks of ‘longing’ and the anticipation for the return of a loved one. Missing someone is a very powerful feeling. Have you missed someone this year? I do. I miss my friends, my family, my loved ones.

It is a beautiful album that withstands the passage of time very well. Listen to it. It will make very good company while you knit this Fisherman’s Woman Sweater.

This pretty turtleneck sweater is knitted with one strand of DK yarn and one strand of mohair from Serafina Yarns held together.

It is worked top-down starting at the collar. Raglan sleeves make for a very easily customizable garment.

A central panel that combines very simple cables and fun and perfect bobbles are framed by a sea of calming stockinette stitch.

There are two options to work the sleeves: regular slim sleeves or dramatic and puffy. Hem and cuff are worked in twisted ribbing for a super stylish finish.
