The Yellowstone Hat
The Yellowstone Hat is inspired by the Beauty of Montana, Yellowstone Park being one of the Crown Jewels of the state.
This hat is a beautiful but simple knitted project that can be worn by anyone. There are two options for the ribbing, and the colors are flexible. The charts for the stranded color work are made so that you can color in the pattern with colored pencils. Have fun with choosing the colors.
The sizes are for small, medium and large adult heads
The sizes depend on gauge. A larger hat has a looser gauge knit with larger needles, while the smaller sizes have a tighter gauge using smaller needles.
Yarn:
You will need between 220 and 300 yards of worsted weight yarn, and about 50 yards of three additional colors. The colors used are included in the Pom Pom.
Needles:
Size small: Size 2 (2.75 mm) 16” circular needles, and 3 (3.25 mm) 16” circular
needles and double pointed needles.
Size medium size 3 (3.25 mm) 16” circular needles and size 4 (3.5 mm) needles 16”
circular needles and double pointed needles.
Size large size 4 (3.5 mm) 16” circular needles, and size 5 (3.75 mm) 16” circular
needles and double pointed needles.

Pattern Notes
- Gauge matters for this pattern. Make sure you swatch to find the correct needles for the yarn you are using.
- The charts use gray so that you can customize your colors. It is helpful to use colored pencils to indicate the colors of yarn you will be using.
- If you want the hat to be taller, just add more rounds before you begin the crown shaping section.
- There are two choices for ribbing. A 4” 2x2 rib that folds up will require more yarn than a 1 ½” rib.
- Pom-Poms look great on this hat. The Clover Pom-Pom maker, or other gadget really helps to make a nice fluffy pop-pom. A helpful tutorial video from Clover is included
Or you can create your own Pop-Pom maker with an old CD and Popsicle sticks. A fun tutorial for that is also included.
