This shawl was inspired by the Thistle. “The thistle is an ancient Celtic symbol of nobility of character as well as of birth, for the wounding or provocation of a thistle yields
punishment.”

The Thistle has a very stubborn and invasive root system, and removing the plant from a piece of ground is not an easy task. If you miss just a little piece of the root, you’ll find the Thistles come back in force the following year. It’s physical attributes are delicately beautiful flower heads, viciously sharp thorns, it’s stubborn and tenacious grip on the land, and it’s defiant ability to flourish in spite of efforts to remove it.

The size and shape of the shawl lends itself to be worn either traditionally or draped in a number of ways around the neck, enhancing any outfit for any occasion.

SHAPE: Bottom-up, triangular

NOTIONS: Stitch markers (Optional), tapestry needle for weaving ends.

PATTERN STYLE: The pattern contains written as well as chart instructions. There is a key and full abbreviation list included as well.

DIFFICULTY: Advanced Beginner- It is a repeative pattern that allows one to not necessarily look at the instructions, yet keeps you engaged in the knitting.

YARN: This pattern is better suited for gradiant, soild or tonal yarn to show off the detail of the lace.

NOTE: The sample used approximately 710 yards,
275 yards/249.2 meters for the border and 435 yards/384.4 meters for the body. If you are a loose knitter, do not swatch to get guage, or wish to knit this using a larger needle then recommended, please account for more yardage than recommended.
