Umbra Ombré
Umbra Ombré is a funky crescent shaped shawl that uses color and simple short row shaping to give a dramatic, geometric flair to this shawl!
The short rows give the body section some shaping to expand the ombré out in the center and a bit of mini short rows make the chevron border flare out and make that edge POP!
You can use anywhere from 5-9 colors for this shawl and totally OWN that ombré!
Size: 75 in/190 cm along the top edge of the shawl X 19 in/48 cm at the widest part of the shawl. Shawl size may vary, depending on individual knitter’s gauge, yarns used, and blocking preferences.
Recommended yarn: 5-9 colors of Worsted/DK weight yarns in tonals, semi-solids, solids, speckles, or lightly variegated colors and tones.
You can also hold 2 strands of fingering weight yarns together to get an equivalent weight of yarn and an extra SQUISH factor! Just double the yardage for that color!
Sample Used: Malabrigo Rios (100% Merino; 210 yd/192 m) in the color ways:
- C1: Frank Ochre
- C2: Glitter
- C3: Playa
- C4: Cirrus Grey
- C5: Bobby Blue
- C6: Aguas
- C7: Fresco y Seco
- C8: Ivy
- C9: VAA
Yardage: C1-C9: 110 yd/101 m of each color. (220 yd/202 m of each color, if using fingering weight held doubled)
Needles: One set of US size 9/5.5 mm circular needles in a 32”-40” (80-100 cm) length.
Gauge: 4-4.5 sts to the inch/cm in garter stitch on a US size 9 / 5.5 mm needles.

Color Note:
As mentioned above, you can use any range of colors from five to nine! The pattern is written for the 9 color version, but for the 5, 6, and 7 color versions, follow the instructions below for color placement! This will also change yardage amounts based on your color version, so check out the version notes below for more info!
-
For a 5 Color version: Break the colors up into sets of two. C1-C2 will be your first color, followed by C3-C4 as your second, C5-C6 as your third, C7-C8 as your fourth, and C9 as your fifth! You would need about 210 yd/192 m each of C1-4 and 110 yd/101 m for C5.
-
For a 6 Color version: Do C1-5 as is in the pattern, then switch to C6 for the remainder of the shawl (C6-C9). This will give you a nice ombré in the main body of the shawl and a great border color to set those tones off! You would need 110 yd/101 m each of C1-5 and 420 yd/384 m of C6.
-
For a 7 Color version: Do C1-5 as stated in the pattern, then switch to C6 for C6-7 and C7 for C8-9. This will give you a nice transition between all the colors and make your border pop out a bit more! You would need 110 yd/101 m each of C1-5 and 210 yd/192 m each of C6-C7.
Techniques Used in This Pattern: SLPYO (German) Short Rows, YO increases, k2tog/SSK decreases, color striping, and basic knit and purl stitches.
