I have been playing around with the idea of a cabled scarf. Here I have used reversible cables and garter stitch for a piece that is apparently easy but uses a number of quite advanced techniques. The scarf starts with a short provisional cast on, then the bottom border is knitted with a plump and prominent reversible cable. When the border is long enough, stitches are picked up along the garter edge of the border, and the cast on. The corners are then rounded with short rows and the center is filled with garter stitch, while the ribbing is continued along the two short sides. The stole is bound off in I-cord.
The scarf is knitted with a single large ball of Varanasi, Katia yarns’ shawl-specific single ply yarn. Despite being an acrylic blend, this yarn is extremely soft and feels luscious against the skin. Its sharp color changes add interest by behaving in a completely different way in the cabled edge and in the garter center with ribbed sides. Varanasi Baby can be worn as a scarf around the neck or as a narrow but long shawl to complement outerwear or a comfy indoors look. The yarn colors are granted to add light and fun to your coldest winter days, while the slight curvature keeps it snug around the neck or shoulders.

È da un po’ che mi gira in testa l’idea di fare una sciarpa con delle trecce. Qui ho usato una treccia reversibile per una stola che nella sua semplicità nasconde una serie di tecniche abbastanza avanzate. La lavorazione inizia con un avvio provvisorio, quindi il bordo inferiore è lavorato con una soffice e vistosa treccia reversibile. Quando il bordo è sufficientemente lungo, si riprendono le maglie lungo il margine a legaccio e l’avvio. Gli angoli sono quindi arrotondati con ferri accorciati e il centro della stola è riempito a maglia legaccio, mentre le coste proseguono lungo i lati corti. Infine il lavoro si intreccia con un’I-cord.
La stola è lavorata con un unico gomitolone di Varanasi, il filato stoppino di Katia specifico per scialli. Nonostante sia un misto acrilico, è estremamente morbido e ha una mano ricca e delicata. I rapidi cambi di colore aggiungono interesse comportandosi in modo radicalmente diverso nel bordo a treccia e nel centro a legaccio. Può essere indossata come una sciarpa attorno al collo o come una stretta ma lunga stola, a complemento di un cappotto o di un look da portare in interni. I colori del filato garantiscono l’apporto di luce e allegria alle giornate più fredde dell’inverno, mentre la leggera curva aiuta a indossarlo confortevolmente attorno al collo.
