Weldon's Shawl Lattice
This pattern is from ca. 1892 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 5, p.4. Weldon intended it for a shawl but it would make a nice afghan or scarf, too. There are 8 rows to the pattern; 6 of those rows are stockinette stitch. The pattern has a multiple of 6 stitches. Weldon’s pattern included 6 garter-stitch border stitches but you can omit these, if preferred. I converted 2 of the border stitches to selvage stitches for a better looking edge.
I recommend using a size or 2 larger needles than normal due to pulling stitches over 3 other stitches. This might get a bit tight at normal gauge. Also, I recommend needles with long, pointy tips to help slip 3 stitches between needles. I used older Boye aluminum needles.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, pull a stitch over 3 stitches and bind off in a stretchy stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
54 yards of OH Baby Organic yarn will make 10 inches of a 35-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
