The inspiration for the Winter Lights shawl is the very simple idea of creating light in the darkness and in particular, the darkness that we experience during the winter months in the northern hemisphere. At this time of year, we often turn to lights, such as fairy lights, candles, lanterns and even fireworks, to help us ‘light-up the dark’. Asides from the practical reasons for lighting lights when it’s dark, I think candles and fairy-lights take on a symbolic meaning during winter. They represent the hope that the light will return in the springtime, and there is also something magical about lights and a sort of pre-historic satisfaction at being able to strike a match and create light!

CONSTRUCTION NOTES
Winter Lights is a triangular shawl knitted from side to side in two halves, which are joined together with a 3- needle cast-off after knitting each half. Tassels are made and attached to each corner (a video tutorial link is provided to help with this).

YARN
160g of 4ply / fingering-weight of approx. 400m / 437 yds per 100g in the following amounts:
1 x 100g skein for MC
3 x 20g mini-skeins for CC1-3 or 6 x 10g mini-skeins for CC1-3 Right Hand Side and CC1-3 Left Hand Side
Blue Version:
Rusty Ferret, Doll (4ply / fingering-weight; 425m / 464 yards per 100g; 75% merino/25% nylon)
1 x 100g skein of Doll in Static (MC)

Ideally your MC and CCs will be high contrast, so either a dark MC and lighter CCs, or a light MC and dark/bright CCs. The CCs look most effective if they are speckled or variegated yarns.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
4 mm / US 6 circular needle, 80 cm (32”) long (shawl is knitted flat but a circular needle is recommended to accommodate the number of sts). An extra circular needle or straight needle is required for working the 3-needle cast-off and you may find a DPN in one size larger handy for the cast-off, especially is you tend to cast off tightly.
2 stitch markers (these are optional, and not mentioned in the instructions, but you might find it helpful to place a marker after/before the 3 i-cord edge sts on each side of the shawl), credit card-sized object for making tassels, tapestry needle, blocking pins (wires optional).

20 sts x 26 rows = 10 cm / 4” measured over garter st stripe pattern, after blocking
