This is the air, that is the glorious sun.
This pearl she gave me, I do feel ’t and see ’t,
And though ’tis wonder that enwraps me thus,
Yet ’tis not madness. …
For though my soul disputes well with my sense
That this may be some error, but no madness,
Yet doth this accident and flood of fortune
So far exceed all instance, all discourse,
That I am ready to distrust mine eyes
And wrangle with my reason that persuades me
To any other trust but that I am mad—
Or else the lady’s mad.

Isn’t love grand? I think wonder and madness almost perfectly capture the idea of love at first sight— Olivia’s silly infatuation with Viola and her subsequent passion for Sebastian; and Sebastian’s immediate desire to be wed to Olivia. Of course, it’s a comedy, so it’s all going to work out fine in the end, but meanwhile, they all go a little bit mad! This sock pattern is great for self-striping sock yarn or for using up leftovers. Either way you go, you’ll find that hearts and rainbows dominate this sock.

Skill-level: Intermediate, due to some basic lace stitches and a bit of stranding.
Materials: approximately 350-400 yards (320-365 m) of sock yarn. If using left-overs, you’ll need approximately 300-350 yards (275-320 m) of a main color, and a variety of scraps in at least 5 yard lengths (or mix it up completely and do your own thing). The socks pictured are size X-Large used an entire skein of White Birch Fiber Arts’ sock yarn in the color “Nothing Says Screw You Like a Rainbow”
Needles: US 1 (2.25mm) sock needles, pattern is written for both DPNs and Magic Loop
Tools: Measuring Tape, Scissors, and a Tapestry Needle
Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rounds per inch or 2.5 cm in Stockinette stitch (pattern gauge is slightly looser).
Sizing: Small (Medium, Large, Extra-large) socks measure approximately 8(9,10,11) inches or 20.3(22.9,25.4,27.9) cm in circumference. The leg height, ankle depth, and foot length are all adjustable to size and preference.
