Wraps Per Inch Hat
Handspun yarn offers a wonderful opportunity to learn how to calculate our knitting weight. Let’s learn how to use wraps per inch to knit a hat with our amazing handspun yarns and in sizes for the whole family.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4) 5, 6, 7, 8
Brim Circumference: approximately 10 (14, 16, 16) 18, 18, 22, 22“ / 25 (35, 40, 40) 45, 45, 55, 55 cm
Total Hat Length: 6 1/2 (8, 9, 10) 9 3/4, 10 3/4, 11 1/4, 12 1/4” / 16.5 (20, 22.5, 25) 24.5, 27, 27.5, 30 cm
Choose a size with a brim circumference 5-15% smaller than head circumference.
Measurements are an average of all the gauges listed, see schematic for more details.
GAUGE
Fingering / 14 WPI: 28 stitches and 38 rows;
Sport / 12 WPI: 24 stitches and 28 rows;
DK / 11 WPI: 22 stitches and 28 rows;
Worsted / 9 WPI: 20 stitches and 28 rows;
Aran / 8 WPI: 18 stitches and 26 rows;
= 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch, after blocking
Please note that changes in gauge will affect yardage used and final measurements.
YARN REQUIREMENTS
Fingering / 14 WPI: 220 yd / 200 m – 320 yd / 290 m
Sport / 12 WPI: 210 yd /195 m – 300 yds / 275 m
DK / 11 WPI: 155 yd / 140 m – 250 yd / 230 m
Worsted / 9 WPI: 150 yd / 135 m – 210 yd / 195m
Aran / 8 WPI: 120 yd / 110 m – 170 yd / 155 m

Circular needles, 16” / 40 cm long, one size smaller than that required for gauge

Double pointed needles in the same size as circular needles (or preferred needle for working small circumference at the crown)
