Wrought Iron Socks
The twisted stitches in this sock give the pattern its name, reflecting the intricacies of old-fashioned wrought iron. To counter-balance how the cabled stitches pull in the fabric slightly, the back of the sock is covered with a simple 4 stitch ribbed repeat. The ribbing is slightly cabled to complement the cabling on the front of the sock.
Sizes: The pattern instructions are provided for two sizes, womens medium (8.5”) and large (10”). Where the instructions differ, the instructions for the large size are provided in brackets ( ).
The cables in this pattern are simple 1/1 cables.
Materials: 325-375 yards (297- 343m) of fingering sock yarn 3.5 oz/395 yds (113g/360 m) or similar, 1 set of 5 US #1 (2.5 mm) double-point needles, or size needles required to obtain gauge.
Shown in Madelinetosh sock yarn (395yd/114g). Medium sample sock used approximately 44 g (155 yards/141 m) per sock.
Large sample sock used approximately 50g (175 yards/160 m) per sock. Samples were knit 2.5 pattern repeats for the leg and 2.5 repeats on the foot.
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner. Knitters should be familiar with knitting cables and sock construction.
The instructions reference the sole and instep stitches rather than specifying needles, allowing you to use your preferred method (4 or 5 needles, magic loop, 2 circular needles). Each pattern repeat is approximately 2” long. If you wish to add length to the leg of the sock, add the appropriate number of pattern repeats and adjust your yarn requirements accordingly.
Photos show the cuff down heel patterning. The toe-up heel is stocking stitch.
