Cake Socks
When knotted double crochet is worked in the round it produces a ridged-on-the-outside, but supersmooth-on-the-inside fabric that has a surprising amount of elasticity- just perfect for a well-fitting sock! Chroma yarn will take care of all the color changes for you, making these socks a great choice for a sock newbie, or for a more experienced crocheter looking for an easy project.
Ribbing is worked back and forth in turned rows and slip stitched to form a tube, stitches are then worked into the bottom edge of the ribbing and remainder of sock is worked top-down. Ankle is worked in the round, then a heel flap is worked in turned rows, after turning the heel, stitches are picked up along edge of heel flap and continued in the round, decreasing along sides to form the gusset and ending at toe.
Choose a size that measures about .5-1” smaller than foot circumference for best fit. Length of leg and foot is easily customizable- finished length of sock should measure about 1” shorter than foot length for best fit.
The name of this project has been changed from “Cakewalk” to “Cake”. At the time that this project was named I was unaware of the complicated origins of the term “cakewalk.” I thought it just meant that something was easy to achieve. Somebody contacted the editors after the pattern was published and let them know that it was offensive to them. I really appreciate that they took the time to let us know. If you are unaware of the origins of the term “cakewalk” please read this article: here.
