A palindrome is a sequence of characters, like a word or a phrase, that reads the same whether your read it for- or backwards. These socks look the same from the toe as from the cuff, hence the name. As a twist, they’re knitted with reversed colours, like photonegatives of each other.

They socks can be knit in any fingering weight/4-ply sock yarn. The pattern is written for toe-up, but they can be easily reversed to top-down. Simply cast on the number of stitches given below for the desired width, and follow the pattern backwards starting with the cuff. Like reading a palindrome backwards! :) The heel is completely reversible and can be knitted the same way for top-down as for toe-up.

The pattern includes three different widths: S (60 stitches, 19 cm/7.5in), M (66 stitches, 21 cm/8.3in) or L (72 stitches, 23 cm/9.1in). The heel is knitted with short rows using the wrap-and-turn method (I do however highly recommend the Fish Lips Kiss heel as a substitute - the pattern for this can be found on Ravelry for just $1).

How much yarn you will need depends entirely on both the width and the length of the socks. The largest testknit pair - size EU43 in L width - used up approximately 60 g (250 m) of each colour. I highly recommend having a little extra - you don’t want to run out of yarn before you’ve run out of sock to knit…

32 stitches/40 rows in stranded colourwork per 10 cm/4 inches on size 2.5mm/US1.5 needles will result in socks with the following width:
S: 19 cm/7.5 inches
M: 21 cm/8.3 inches
L: 23 cm/9.1 inches

Ett palindrom är en följd av tecken - vanligtvis ord eller hela meningar, som är likadant oavsett om det läses fram- eller baklänges. Dessa sockar ser likadana ut oavsett om man ser dem från mudden eller från tån, och därifrån kommer namnet. För att göra dem ännu lite roligare stickas sockarna med omvända färger - de blir som fotonegativ av varandra.

De kan stickas i vilket tunt sockgarn som helst, tex Opal, Regia eller Drops Fabel. Mönstret är skrivet för tå-upp, men de kan utan problem stickas uppifrån och ner - lägg upp maskantalet som anges för önskad storlek här nedan, börja med mudden och arbeta dig uppåt i mönstret. Som att läsa ett palindrom baklänges… :) Hälen stickas precis likadant från båda håll.

Sockarna kan göras i tre olika skaft/fotvidder: S (60 m, 19 cm), M (66 m, 21 cm) eller L (72 m, 23 cm). Hälen stickas med kortvarv, och sockarna kan göras till vilken fotlängd som helst.

Hur mycket garn som behövs beror på både vidd och längd på sockan. Till de största som provstickats - ett par L i storlek 43 - användes ca 60 g (250 m) av varje färg. Jag rekommenderar varmt att ha god marginal - det är så retsamt att få slut på garn innan sockorna är klara…

32 maskor/40 varv i flerfärgsstickning per 10 cm på stickor 2,5 mm (eller den stickstorlek där du får rätt stickfasthet) ger följande skaftvidder:
