Asdis Birgis
I am an Icelandic textile designer specializing in hand knitting with lopi, the traditional Icelandic yarn made from the wool of our native sheep.
Icelandic sheep have lived in isolation for more than 1,100 years, adapting to the harsh North Atlantic climate. This has created one of the world’s purest and oldest sheep breeds, producing a unique fleece with exceptional qualities. The wool is naturally double-coated: a soft insulating undercoat (þel) combined with a longer, stronger and water-resistant outer fiber (tog). When processed together, these fibers create lopi, a yarn that is warm, breathable, lightweight and extremely durable—ideal for long-lasting outdoor garments.
My work focuses on original sweater designs, often inspired by traditional Icelandic textile heritage. I draw from historical weaving and embroidery motifs and reinterpret them through the circular yoke knitting technique characteristic of the Icelandic lopapeysa.
Through these designs I aim to connect Iceland’s textile traditions with contemporary knitting, creating garments that celebrate both craft and the unique qualities of Icelandic wool.
