Kia Ora!
Amikihia Knits is a collaboration with my husband (Ngāi Tahu / Ngāti Porou). Traditionally Māori told their stories through weaving and carving. Knitting is our expression of storytelling. I love knitting and creating designs that tell the story of the utter beauty of creation. There is plenty of inspiration as we live in stunning Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa (South Island, New Zealand). My aim, because life is busy, is to make garments that are very practical / throw on and go but full of pretty details.
Amikihia in te reo Māori is ‘stories told in detail’. Isn’t that what knitting is all about? Not only the story of the yarn and how it got on the needles, but each stitch tells of what is happening in life and the reasons we knit. It’s the conversations had and life processed through each knitted moment.
You are so welcome to contact us at amikihiaknits@gmail.com and tell us your story!
