Pattern description from Knit.1, Spring/Summer 2008: “In Chinese, the word ‘panda’ translates to ‘large bear cat,’ and indeed the cuddly-looking creature shares the cat’s vertical-slit eyes. Long a symbol of Chinese diplomacy, the giant panda dines on 25 different species of bamboo. Sadly, the woody plant is becoming increasingly harder for these denizens of China’s mountain ranges to come by as they are squeezed out of their habitat by warmer temperatures and human settlement, making the giant panda one of the world’s most endangered animals.”
