Pattern Description from Vogue Knitting, Holiday 2008: “Laura Bryant’s plush opera coat, in Prism Arts’ ‘Velvet,’ is made in sixteen vertical ‘modules’ that build upon each other sequentially and are shaped with decreases and short rows. The sleeves are worked in 2 modules; the front bands, in garter stitch picked up from the module edges. the collar is stitched separately and sewn on.”

Knitted Measurements:

  • Bust (closed) 42 (46)“/106.5 (117) cm
  • Length 42½ (45)“/108 (114.5) cm

Materials:

  • 12 (13) 2oz/58g hanks (each approx 88yd/79m) of Prism Arts Velvet (nylon) in smoke (A)
  • 9 (10) hanks in ebony (B)
  • Two size 6 (4mm) circular needles, each 32”/80cm long or size to obtain gauge
  • One pair size 8 (5mm) straight needles
  • One size H/8 (5mm) crochet hook
  • Five 1½“ (38mm) buttons
  • Stitch markers

Note: Each modular panel is made in a lengthwise strip with decreased wedge shaping to form the narrow end and short row shaping to add width to the wider end. On the final row of each strip, a 3 needle bind-off joins the piece to complete the rectangular panel. Refer to assembly diagram when working specific modules.
