1889 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, Volume 2’s engraving of this reversible edging reminded me of old-fashioned baby shoes! It starts with just 9 stitches, increases to 18 and decreases back to 9 stitches in 12 pattern rows. I changed the pattern by substituting 6 e-wrap cast-on stitches in the middle of row 1 for the original 6 yarn overs. The yarn overs were too loose to easily control. This pattern also has nice long stretches of knit stitches. Gilbert edging is best for a curved edge.
Skills needed: long-tail cast on, e-wrap cast on, knit, purl, slip, yarn over, double yarn over, k2tog and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.

4 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make about 18 rows (1.3 inches) in the stated gauge.
