This hat is my 52nd published design and it was released on my 52nd birthday!

52 is an easy to knit hat with a vintage vibe, with its garter texture and simple colorwork.
The most interesting feature of this pattern is that it is a… transformer!

Using a simple trick, it can be worn in 3 different ways with a different look and feel: it can be a casual slouchy (almost a pixie) hat, a more formal bucket hat, and even a turban-like cloche. All possible results of this single pattern are achieved with the use of a simple string “grafting” the knit fabric more or less tightly.

52 is made with a two-color pattern that can be worked using a pseudo-mosaic technique for a more comfortable knit or stranded knitting for a faster knit. This pattern provides written and charted instructions for the “mosaic” version, but instructions for the stranded colorwork are only charted.

Finished size: One size fits most adult heads.
Size is easily customized by using different yarn weight and needle size.
Materials
Yarn
MC: DK weight wool or wool mix yarn in a solid color, approx 125m (136.7 yds).
CC: DK weight wool or wool mix yarn in a gradient color, approx 90 m (98.4 yds).
Needles
3.25 mm /US 3 * DPNs, minicircular, or circular needle with 100 cm/40” cable for the brim.
(Optional) 3 mm /US 2 ½ (or smaller) DPNs, minicircular, or circular needle for the folded hem.
3.75 mm/ US 5 * DPNs, minicircular, or circular needle with 100 cm/40” cable for the crown.
