I used odd bits of worsted weight I had in my stash, but you can use any yarn, just adjust your needle and stitches accordingly. you can also easily change it to crochet, just by doing a double crochet stitch (USA term) to make little squares and rectangles

tis terrible easy to make and you can make as many or as few of the knitted flags as you like and then string them together, to create your own little string of yarny goodness
