A new hybrid heel!
Skills needed:
--shadow stitch short rows (see my video: https://youtu.be/XLqwiqcIcLk)
--k2tog and ssk
This is a hybrid short row and gusset heel recipe with possible variations.
Here is a video demo: https://youtu.be/oPluE2bOfo4
The short row wedge may follow whatever size sock/foot is desired as usual, but uses the shadow stitch method for turning.
Then in one round, all the shadow stitches are worked individually, so that if you have a 11-10-11 wedge, before beginning the decreasing gusset, you will have 22-10-22 stitches for the heel.
The gusset decreases may be achieved wherever a designer chooses!
Here, I place the k2tog (knit 2 together) and ssk (slip slip knit) at the corners of the heel for a traditional look.
Some features to distinguish this heel are that, if using self-striping or variegated yarn, there is pooling for the wedge, but the gusset breaks that up in an attractive way. The stripes change direction slightly at the decreases, and the short row wedge has less color block dominance because it’s not clam-shelled.
This hybrid heel has a tendency to feel short, so I would recommend making the wedge deeper than “your normal” to create more curve to the heel. The gusset also feels short because the decreases (I made) were every row, so having more of them with the deeper wedge helps there, too.
