A friend gave me 2 skeins of Knit Picks, Diadem, DK weight Alpaca/Silk in copper and black colorways; they became the inspiration for this new shawl pattern, “A Study in Flow”.

The name refers to the random ways I used the 3 elements that make up this shawl, stockinette sections, openwork sections and stranded colorwork sections. The construction is a simple staggered increase throughout, so, as long as you leave enough yarn to bind off, you can keep going and make this as big as you want it to be, depending on how many yards you have to work with. I pretty much used up both skeins for this one.

I include instructions and charts for each of the elements, but how long you make them, or how often you use them, is totally up to you….so what you end up with, as you tap into your own sense of flow, will be your unique design. For instance, the openwork sections consist of 4 rows each, sometimes I repeated them 4 times, sometimes 3 times etc. The colorwork sections I used only when I changed from one color to the other…. However, you can do whatever you like … remember… just flow!

The Alpaca/Silk makes a luscious, soft fabric with a beautiful sheen and drape….but you could use any smooth textured, DK weight yarn with contrasting colorways….it needed a good blocking to bring out it’s shape, so, I recommend a good animal based fiber as opposed to any type of acrylic.

No matter how you incorporate the elements, your creation will be a beautiful reflection of you … enjoy and don’t forget to FLOW
