Christina was the unwanted monarch of Sweden destined to disappoint her country; she was an enigma of her time. She took female lovers and converted to Catholicism, becoming one of three women buried in the Papal Vatican Grottoes. She refused femininity in both attire and manners and was extremely lavish when hosting parties. Christina walked in the world as a contradiction to societal rules and expectations, preferring to live a role unprescribed to her, astutely making her own rules and retaining much of her influence throughout Europe. After approximately two decades of royal power, she chose to abdicate - ultimately removing her own crown and gifting it to her cousin.
