Abington Mitts
The Abington Mitts were designed to match my Abington Hat. They use similar repeats of twisted stitches and cables as the focal point for the top of the hand.
The mitts are worked from the wrist up and are customizable. Make them as long or short as you prefer while using the stitch count for your size of Small (Medium, Large).
3 Sizes: Small (Medium, Large)
- Finished palm circumference: 6 (7, 8) in / 15.25 (17.75, 20.25) cm
- Intended to fit with a little bit of negative ease. Select the size that is closest to your hand circumference as measured just below the knuckles and above the thumb gusset. If you are between sizes, I’d recommend going down to a smaller size.
- Gauge: 22 stitches & 30 rounds in 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette in the round (after blocking) with larger needles
- Note: cable panel measures 2.75 in / 7 cm wide and is same for all sizes.
Materials
- Yarn: DK weight
- Yarn used in samples: 66 (70, 80) grams. 162 (172, 196) yards / 148 (157, 179) meters
- If you plan to make your mitts longer in the wrist and or/hand, you will need more yarn.
- Needles: US 4 / 3.5 mm & US 6 / 4.0 mm, 32 in / 80 cm circulars for magic loop, or your preferred needles for knitting in the round.
- Notions: Cable needle, waste yarn, tapestry needle, scissors, 1 stitch marker to mark the beginning of round, 4 additional stitch markers
Pattern Notes:
This pattern has been tech edited & test knit.
Instructions are both written and charted.
About the Name
Abington is the town in Massachusetts where I met my best friend (at her mother’s dancing school) and where we each met the loves our lives- amazingly enough- they happen to be brothers. Since then, our three families have been intertwined much like the twists and cables in this hat. We may not be related by blood, but they are just as much my family and part of my heart. As I worked these twists and cables I remember how many times and ways our lives and paths have intersected and at times moved apart, always coming back together!
