Actias Luna Moth Beret
This design is a modern twist on the classic beret. Soft faux fur yarn is used for the body to mimic the head of a Luna moth. The beret works up extremely quickly due to the bulky yarn and is quite warm. The antennae are worked in the round and seamed to the front of the hat.
This was designed to be paired with Actias Luna Moth Wings Shawl. It will complete the look if you so choose.
Sizes: Baby (Toddler, Child) (Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large, Adult Extra Large) for a finished rough opening circumference of 13” (15”, 17”) (18.5”, 20”, 22”, 24”)/33 (38, 43) (47, 51, 56, 61) cm.
Measure around your head and choose a size with roughly 1”/2.5 cm of negative ease, or your preferred amount of ease.
Yarn: 50 - 100 yards/45 - 90 meters of super-bulky yarn and 30 yards/30 meters of sport weight yarn.
Sample shown in Sirdar Alpine colorway Polar and Swan Island Washable Wool Sport colorway Ochre.
Needles: Size US 15/10 mm and US 3/3.25 mm circular or double-point needles (for working in the round), or size needed to obtain gauge on bulkier yarn and needles appropriate in size for the thinner yarn.
Gauge: 7 stitches x 13 rows = 4”/10 cm square in Stockinette stitch using super-bulky yarn and larger needles.
Notions: 11 closed-ring stitch markers, blocking mat and t-pins (optional), dinner plate (optional, for adult sizes), and felt or thin plastic canvas (optional, scrap amount, for antennae).
Techniques: Knitting in the round and twisted decreases (see guide at the end of the pattern for help).
