What a great vest to wear over a shirt! Using strands taken from the self-patterning yarn, the squares of colour on the back echo the stripes on the front to great effect. Because it’s sleeveless, it’s really built for action!

Worked bottom up in pieces and seamed together. Shoulders are joined with three-needle bind off. Stitches are picked up around the armholes and front edges to create an edging. Buttons may be place either on the right or left front.

This knitting pattern includes written directions, a schematic with measurements, front and back images and yardage amounts for each intarsia butterfly/bobbin required.

Choose a fingering weight/4-ply yarn with easy care instructions. Superwash wool and sock yarns (whether wool or cotton blends) will work wonderfully. The self-patterning yarn may be substituted with a solid colour, a variegated yarn or a gradient yarn.

Techniques
Working intarsia from written instructions, increases/decreases, short rows, three-needle bind-off, basic sweater construction, worked flat, bottom up, seaming, picking up stitches, buttonholes and sewing on buttons.
