This poncho is dedicated to my mother, Aina, who used to wear beautiful aran weight ponchos and cardigans in natural white wool. I always admired them and loved their cosy warmth.

The design is a celebration of the elegance of simplicity. It is a one size garment for the chilly season, that can be worn either open or closed at the neck. It is a completely seamless piece.

The body is knitted in one piece, with only two loose ends to weave in once completed. It is knitted in a modified Half Fisherman’s Rib pattern, giving it an elegant structure that flatters the curves of the body. The shaping of the poncho allows for gently billowing warmth, with the front and back longer, while the sides are shorter to allow flexibility for the arms. The collar is a soft, squishy rib that folds double and is closed at the side with a simple crochet chain, which also makes for the button loop. The fringe is a traditional Fair Isle fringe that is reminiscent of a fishing net.

The pattern is for aran weight yarn, but can also be applied to double knit or chunky, though this will affect the size and dimensions of the poncho.

Materials needed:
Circular needles/DPNS for the collar, 4.5mm.
Circular needles for the body, 120cm long, 5mm.
Crochet hook for casting on and for making the knits of the fringe, 5.5mm
Stitch markers
Tapestry needle
A length of scrap yarn, preferably smooth cotton
Scissors
2x buttons

Yarn usage:
650g Uradale Yarns aran weight. This shows the poncho in Flukkra (natural white), but any colour can be used.
