Alba Cardigan is designed to preserve the clean line of garter stitch, both for its understated elegance and for the practicality of not having to purl. The cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down. The neckline is added at the end to give you maximum finishing flexibility. The construction is planned so that even though the neckline is worked last, there is no visible pickup line along the front neck. This allows you to wear it with the lapel folded over and still keep a smooth, uninterrupted look.

Alba Cardigan is graded with inclusive sizing in mind and is designed to fit actual bust sizes from 76 cm / 30 inches to 168 cm / 66 inches. Measurements are given in both centimeters and inches.

Finished Measurements

Bust circumference (2 x back width at the underarm): 97.5 (108, 118.5, 126.5, 138.5) {145.5, 157.5, 166.5, 181.5, 190.5} cm / 38.25 (42.5, 46.75, 49.75, 54.5) {57.25, 62, 65.5, 71.5, 75} inches inches

Gauge

15 sts and 29 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in Garter stitch on larger needle, blocked.

Materials

Needles

5.5 mm / US 9 circular needle of length 80-100 cm / 32-40 inches, depending on your size; adjust needle size if necessary to obtain gauge.

4 mm / US 6 circular needle of length 60 cm / 24 inches or longer, for the neckline

4.5 mm / US 7 needle, any type, for the belt

Yarn

2 strands of lace weight brushed yarn held together knit to a chunky gauge (15 sts per 10 cm / 4 inches).

It gives a loose and airy fabric. You should get a similar effect using two strands of lace weight mohair yarn.

Yardage for each strand: 900 (990, 1075, 1155, 1245) {1305, 1415, 1490, 1610, 1695} m / 985 (1085, 1180, 1260, 1365) {1425, 1550, 1630, 1760, 1850} yds, including 10% allowance.

If you are using a single strand of heavier yarn, the above yardage is what you should look for. The required yardage is likely to decrease slightly as the yarn weight goes up.

Shown here: Cardiff Cashmere Prime (68% cashmere, 32% silk; 300 m / 328 yds, 25 g / 0.88 oz ball):

  • 3 (4, 4, 4, 5) {5, 5, 5, 6, 6} balls in the color #179

    3 (4, 4, 4, 5) {5, 5, 5, 6, 6} balls in the color #128

The sample is made with 2 different colors to give a richer marled brown.
