The Allele Socks are based on another pattern of mine, the Allele Hat. Made using the helix knitting technique, the Allele hat is deliciously warm and cosy, with swirling, flame-like, two-colour cables boiling up its four sides. From the moment I had completed it, I knew in a heartbeat that the design REALLY wanted to be a pair of socks as well, so I set about adapting it, and this pattern is the result.
The cables are created with two different colours, with strands of one colour elegantly looping over strands of the other, but due to the nature of helix knitting, you are only ever working with one colour at a time: judiciously placed slip-stitches do all the hard work for you!
What looks complex and difficult, is in fact, surprisingly easy to achieve, and the results are utterly stunning: you’ll be wowing knitters and muggles alike with your finished Allele Socks!
The pattern is written for three sizes, and uses two different colours of yarn. I bought one skein of each of two colours of the yarn, and had enough to make these socks (Size M), as well as the corresponding hat pattern, and still had loads left over.
Instructions are given for matching socks, or for “fraternal twins” with the colours reversed and the direction of the cables reversed. You choose!
