When hip local yarn shop StashLocal asked me and moipouf to dream up a window display made entirely of yarn, we pictured a breezy Pacific Northwest fiber wonderland where darling alpacas and blackface sheep frolicked over every hill. These two crocheted alpacas bounded across the pasture and right into our hearts, so we had to share them with you.

To make big props, we used extra large hooks. In order to make a denser fabric, you should use a hook size about half a millimeter smaller than the one recommended on the yarn label. The small alpaca is made by holding the yarn single and using a smaller hook. The large alpaca is made by holding the yarn double and using a larger hook. We encourage you to experiment with this technique in any pattern where fit isn’t a factor.
Sizes: 18 and 30 inches tall.

Skill level: Intermediate

Required skills: It’s about one step up from a beginner’s pattern, using single crochet, increase, decrease, and half double crochet stitches.

Materials: Any yarn weight and the appropriate hook will work for this project. For DK weight yarn you’ll need about 600 yards for the small and 1700 yards for the jumbo alpaca. You’ll also need stuffing, eyes, a nose, a tapestry needle and some pink blush.
