This is a pattern for Alphabet Blocks, originally published in Knit Today in a baby supplement. They are made in one piece, by casting on extra stitches for some of the squares, then sewn up and placed around a foam block. You will need three 10 cm square foam blocks. Any letters can be done on the blocks.
