What can be cosier after a walk or a ski trip in the Alps than put your feet up with woolly socks on and sip a cup of tea?
The Alps socks are quick to make and combine several interesting techniques: lace, slipped stitches, mosaic, wrapped stitches, colourwork. The socks are worked cuff down with a non-standard heel. This type of elegant heels was used in historical stockings belonging to Estonian museum collections.
The pattern is written in two sizes due to the characteristics of the mosaic lace on the cuff. A light sport weight yarn was used for the main colour. Using fingering weight yarn will change the gauge
and width of the finished socks. Socks can be worked on double pointed needles, two circular needles or on other types of needles convenient for the knitter for knitting small circumference in the round. Using the Two-at-Time method to knit both socks at the same time is not encouraged because of the need to slip sts from one needle to another when working the mosaic lace pattern on the cuff.
The pattern uses metric and imperial systems. The colourwork pattern is charted and written. The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted.
Size medium socks are shown in the photo. The yarns used for the sample:
• MC Drops Nord 5 ply, colourway Off White; 54 g / 2 oz.
• CC Madelinetosh Tosh Sock 4 ply, colourway Shell; 4 g / 0.2 oz.
