This is a traditonal baby hat (or bonnet), worn by Andean babies and toddlers. The pattern has been reverse engineerded from pictures taken in Peru.

This hat is knit flat, in one piece and has no seams. The pointy front and pointy ears are typical for Andean baby bonnets of this kind. This version has an extra decoration in the middle section. I think it looks like a plant’s sprout, the symbol of life and youth. It’s created by making extra increases.

This pattern is not a mindless knit, but it’s certainly worth your while.

This hat reminds a lot of the Llama hat, another Andean baby cap I have recreated. That hat also has ears and a pointy front created by knitting chevron stitch. The basic shape of both hats are a slightly different though. The Sprout hat has dec/incs in both side panels and middle section. The Llama hat has only dec/incs in the middle section.
