Andromeda's Wings
“Space. It seems to go on and on forever. But then you get to the end and the gorilla starts throwing barrels at you.” – Fry
Unlike space, this galaxy-themed shawl does not go on forever. In fact, it zips right off your needles (and there are no gorillas involved)! It was born from a challenge to myself to see if I could take a pattern-in-the-round that is normally reserved for the tops of berets and convert it to a wearable shawl. The resulting pattern, combined with the highly variegated and super bright hand-dyed yarn creates this beautiful, swirling cosmic shawl.
Andromeda’s Wings has a unique construction that starts in the center on 4 DPNs and grows outward. The patterning spirals around until you split the stitches in half to work each wing separately with different rates of increase. (Yes, you read that correctly.) The shifts in size are very organic which makes for a really interesting, but also relaxing knit as you create your own wearable cosmos.
Large Size, Faded Version Pattern Update (6/27/18):
This 3-skein color-fade version is perfect for blending gorgeous hand-dyed yarns into a swirling galaxy. Pick colorways that have 1 or 2 common colors for a subtle shift or pick ones that contrast each other for a stark/mod look. If you prefer a more symmetrical shape (as shown in the faded sample), work 2 Large Wings instead of 1 Large & 1 Small Wing. You will have enough yarn for this, it will be larger than indicated.
