Appledore
This pullover is named for an ‘edgy island’ that is part of the Isles of Shoals, an archipelago on the Maine and New Hampshire border in the Northeast United States. Knit seamlessly on circular needles from the top down, Appledore features a mosaic colorwork yoke that is created by knitting slip stitch motifs with one color of yarn worked in a round at a time (no carrying yarns, no catching floats).
This pullover is perfectly suited for making use of wool yarns left over from previous projects and experimenting with your own color combinations! I used a variety of rustic wools for the sample pictured here, including Jill Draper’s Mohonk (which is labeled a sport weight yarn) and Kingston (labeled a DK), as well as some of my hand-dyed fingering weight yarns held double.
You can choose to make your garment with two contrasting colors or several…or perhaps experiment with gradients and fades…FADIENTS! It’s up to you! (The sample sweater shown combines 8 different yarn colors.)
Mosaic patterns are included both as written instructions and in chart form.
Appledore is designed to be worn with positive ease and a deep yoke (it drops a few inches below the underarm); sleeves are slightly more fitted, with ribbed cuffs. The neckline has short row shaping in the back. Both sleeve and body length can easily be adjusted to suit your individual style. Pattern is written for four sizes (1, 2, 3, and 4). Sample in photos is worn with 8 inches of positive ease.
To achieve an even more relaxed fit or larger garment, consider experimenting with gauge and heavier yarns like aran weight (or the equivalent by combining lace, fingering, or sport weight held together) to create a fun and super-cozy project. Feel free to experiment!
GAUGE
19 sts and 24 rows = 4in/ 10cm.
Gauge was measured over stockinette stitch (in main needles) after blocking.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:

body length from underarm — 9 (9.5, 10, 11) inches*
sleeve length from underarm — 12 (13, 13, 14) inches*
upper sleeve circumference — 13 (13, 13.5, 14.5) inches
