Finished Bust: 32” (36”, 40”, 44”) (48”, 52”, 56”) with 0” ease / 81.5 (91.5, 101.5, 112) (122, 132, 142) cm with 0 cm ease

Crewneck version shown in size S on 34” (86 cm) bust with 2” (5 cm) of positive ease.

MATERIALS:

Expression Fiber Arts Luster Worsted yarn (200 yds/183 m per skein)

Shown in colors: Margaret (turtleneck) and Honey Pot (crewneck).

You’ll need 6 (7, 7, 8) ( 8, 9, 9) skeins or 1200 (1300, 1400, 1500) (1600, 1700, 1800) yards of worsted weight yarn.

If those colors aren’t available, any from this category will work.

NEEDLE:

US size 6 in 16”, 24”, 32”, and 40” (only for larger sizes or if you want to use Magic Loop for the sleeves) circular needles and double pointed needles, OR size needed to achieve gauge

SKILL LEVEL:

Advanced - For the adventurous knitter who loves to tackle something a bit more complicated. Skills/concepts include reading a pattern and charts, working cable stitches with or without a cable needle, working twisted stitches, increases and decreases, working in the round with circular needles or dpns, picking up stitches, and garment shaping techniques.

Notes From the Designer:

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings saga, Arathorn, which means “royal eagle” or “steadfast king”, was one of the Rangers of the North and a descendent from the line of kings from the realm of Gondor. Though he never lived to see the return of the king, he was promised that his son would bring hope to the world. Arathorn was the father of Aragorn, who united the peoples of Middle Earth to defeat the forces of Mordor, and as the King of Gondor, brought peace back to their realm.

The Arathorn sweater was inspired by the intricate braids and cables featured throughout the film adaptations of the Lord of the Rings. The sweater features an adjustable collar, cables that form braided ropes and rings, and long raglan sleeves, and it is knit in a soft wool blend, which makes it stylish and warm enough for a trip in the wilds of Middle Earth – or wherever you may wander. The cables are an adaptation of a stitch from Norah Gaughan’s Knitted Cable Sourcebook. The sweater is seamless and knit from the top down and in the round, so it is easy to customize the length of the sleeves and body, if you desire.

I hope you find this sweater to be a lovely addition to your wardrobe. Happy knitting!

  • If you wish to simplify the cables, you can work the Right Twist sections as a plain k2 instead, but it will loosen the gauge of the cables and may alter the amount of yarn needed.

  • The sleeves are primarily worked in stockinette stitch, while the body is primarily worked in reverse stockinette stitch to add interest and to delineate the different sections of the sweater.

  • When placing markers to designate the increases and different cable patterns, try to color coordinate them in pairs to help you keep track of where you are in the round.

  • The pattern contains written and charted instructions, and you will need to be able to read a chart to make this sweater.
