Arborea
Arborea is a lace & mesh semicircular shawl describing the botanical cycle of bud, blossom, and fruit. It is named for the beautiful book The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer.
For the month of June, this pattern is offered free, with the code gift, in gratitude for the many generosities I’ve received over the years. In that spirit, I invite you to look for some way to pay it forward - plant something that enriches your local ecosystem, choose empathy over outrage, pick up some rubbish, help an insect, smile to a stranger. It needn’t be grand - small actions can have more impact than you predict.
- The pattern is charts only, and these charts are dense and complex. This is a challenging pattern, and requires being able to read your knitting.
- The pattern is written for 3 wedges, making a deep crescent, or it can be worked with 2 wedges for half circle.
- Suits lace to fingering weight yarn.
- Uses 800-900m (875-975y) of heavy lace/light fingering weight yarn. (The edging can be extended to soak up a little extra yardage.)
- The design suits solid, very mild semi-solid, or gradient yarn.
- My project page can be found here. I chose Yearning yet again as it’s so lovely to work with and sits nicely between lace and fingering weights.
This design is closely adapted from Kirschblüten by the amazing Herbert Niebling, with alterations to start and finish.
There is a casual KAL for Arborea running here in the Nimble Knits group. This is a relaxed, ongoing event - no deadlines or prizes, and people can start at any time.
