Arbotante in spanish, also known as arc-boutant is an arch-shaped structure used in architecture. For this design, I was inspired by Gothic architecture, specifically by cathedrals and the beautiful designs that form their external and internal structures.

ALSO AVAILABLE IN LEFT HANDED VERSION

DESCRIPTION
The shawl is knitted from the top down with a half pi shawl structure. It starts with the pinhole cast-on method folded in half to achieve the semi-circular shape. The design features lace stitches, bubbles, horizontal I-cord, and horizontally knit cables. The edges are worked in I-cord to provide stability to the shawl. Two colors are alternated in different sections to create contrast.

GAUGE
22 stitches x 30 rows = 10cm / 4”, worked flat with yarn A or B, in stockinette stitch with 3.5mm / US 4 needles, measured after blocking.

YARN
Yarn A: Tejeritas Merino DOTS (85% Superwash Merino, 15% Donegal nep; fingering weight; 400m per 100g skein) 1 skein in color Metal Gold.
Yarn B: Tejeritas Bamboo Cotton Wool (70% Superwash Merino, 15% Bamboo, 15% Cotton; fingering weight; 400m per 100g skein) 1 skein in color Sendero.

NEEDLES

  • 3.5mm / US 4 circular needle, 80cm / 32” length or longer.
  • Optional: 3.75mm / US 5 needle.

Always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

NOTIONS
2 stitch markers, cable needle, tapestry needle.

MEASUREMENTS
Radius: 70cm / 27 1/2”.
Diameter: 140cm / 55”.
The final measurements are not exact as they will depend on how much you stretch your shawl when blocking it.
