Arcana :: A rectangular shawl knit on the bias, transporting you to a different world of mosaic moons, celestial pearl brioche, and brioche lace half-moons. Each stripe is different from the last, showing how different color combinations can transform into something completely new.

I designed this wrap knit on the bias especially for Starlight Knitting Society, a very special yarn shop in Portland, Oregon, for the Rose City Yarn Crawl in 2019! I was completely inspired by the yarn colors dyed for the event by Kemper Wray of Junkyarn, and wanted to create a magical shawl showing off moons in different phases and celestial stripes mimicking the night sky. Skill level: Beginner brioche - Intermediate. Basic brioche skills are not required, but are recommended. Techniques used: knit, purl, knitting increases and decreases, mosaic knitting in garter stitch, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), straightforward brioche increases and decreases (no br4st dec!!), brioche texture, rectangular bias shawl shaping. I wrote this pattern to be very approachable to brioche beginners who want to dive deeper into brioche lace!! The brioche portions are broken up by two-color garter stitch. This is also a fantastic beginner mosaic knitting project! I am also a newbie to mosaic knitting, and this was my first project using the delightful stitch.

Construction Notes: This lightweight rectangular wrap is knit on the bias from side to side, cast on edge to bind off edge. Once the sts are cast on, 1 st is increased at the right edge, while 1 st is decreased at the left edge, to create a lovely angle for the stripes to follow. You will begin with one garter stripe, then move on to 6 exciting stripes of Mosaic Moons. Each stripe will be a completely different color combination so that you can see every outcome. A small section of Pearl Brioche stripes follows, a very fun brioche texture. The center and focal point of the wrap are 6 stripes of Brioche Lace Moons, which float in a sea of two-color garter stitch, with garter stripes in between to divide them. Similar to the Mosaic Moons, each stripe is a different color combination, keeping you engaged and eager to see what the next color combo will reveal. You will end by alternating stripes of Pearl Brioche and Mosaic Moons, to bring balance your finished object.

This pattern has both written instructions and charts, which are used simultaneously.

One size: 97” / 246 cm long and 16” / 40.5 cm wide, measured after blocking. Schematic included with pattern.

Needles: 24” / 61 cm or longer US 5 / 3.75 mm circular needle OR size needed to obtain gauge. Circular needles are used for brioche knitting.

Tools: tapestry needle, row counter

Gauge: 18 sts x 40 rows = 4” / 10 cm; measured in garter stitch (taken after blocking).
