Ard Ghlais - ‘height of the Green’

Ardglass is a small fishing village in County Down. Local history says it’s been a fishing port for over 2,000 years.

It’s the inspiration for the Ardglass Beanie, which pays homage to the fisherman’s beanie. Perhaps because I’m from Boston, live on the island of Ireland, am a water sign or because I adore seafood, but I really think fishing is an incredible industry. It’s a profession dating back to ancient times, and obair chrua go cinnte.

Materials

• Approximately 109 yards/100m - 126 yards/115m of bulky-weight yarn (samples shown in Cascade Yarns Ecological Wool (Platinum) and Eco+ (Shire))
• US10/6.00mm 16”/40cm circular knitting needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
• US10/6.00mm double pointed needles or preferred method for knitting smaller circumferences (e.g. magic loop, second circular, 9” circular needles), or size needed to obtain gauge
• US9/5.5mm 16”/40cm circular knitting needles, or one size smaller than size needed to obtain gauge
• 1 Beginning of the Round stitch marker
• 3 additional stitch markers (for marking decreases)
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Yarn Alternatives

Some testers found that some yarns listed as bulky or chunky weight were too heavy to match gauge. Other yarns testers used where they were able to meet (or nearly meet) gauge include:

Size Guide

This pattern is written in three different sizes, with sizes listed in the instructions as: Size 1 (Size 2, Size 3) and measurements provided in cm and then inches. Centimeters are rounded to the nearest 0.5cm and inches are rounded to the nearest ¼”. The chart below provides suggested sizes and finished dimensions of the hat. The hat has been graded with a proportional negative ease of 12%.
