Walt Disney had considered creating a film adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale “The Little Mermaid” as early as 1941; however, it wasn’t until 1989 that the story finally made it to the big screen. The courageous and independent-minded youngest daughter of King Triton, Ariel was given lavender seashells, aqua fins in a custom color named “Ariel” mixed by Disney artists, and fiery red hair. To get the movement of hair in antigravity correct, animators referenced footage of astronaut Sally Ride in space. They also resurrected the practice of using live actors for movement reference (both in and out of water!), something Walt Disney had often done in his early films. The hard work and close attention to both story and art paid off: Fans worldwide adored the singing mermaid with her rebellious nature and desire to create her own destiny. The movie became an instant Disney favorite, won multiple Oscars®, and helped usher in the Disney Renaissance of the 1990s.
