Armagnac
Armagnac is a giant, lofty shawl featuring lots of garter stitch and three columns of lace leaves. The leaves show up beautifully against the texture of the garter, with a gorgeous line along the sides of each column that really makes the lace distinct against the background.
The shawl is begun as a lace tip and increased every right side row until complete. It’s designed so that all 3 columns are worked on the same chart row once established, making the lace easy to memorize - and the garter stitch sections provide a nice break from attention paid as well. Because this IS summer knitting and it should be easy, right?
Jill Draper’s Mohonk Light yarn is one of my favorites - light and round and lofty - and 2 skeins makes this shawl the perfect, giant size for throwing over shoulders or layering around one’s neck on a cool summer night (although I know I’m going to be wearing this come Fall as well). She has a gorgeous supply of Mohonk Light this Spring, but once it’s gone, we will have to wait a few months for more, so don’t wait to grab your skeins.
Lace is both charted and written.
Since this IS a shawl, exact gauge is not important, but note that size may vary.
As stated in the pattern, pattern is easily modified for more or less yardage and can be worked easily to any desired size once the 3 lace columns are established.
If you need to substitute for the Mohonk Light (once this batch is all gone and we wait for the sheep to make more…), I suggest a Fingering to Sport weight yarn, worked on #5 or #6 needle so that the fabric has drape, but also stitch definition. Another Cormo or Targhee wool would have a similar loft and drape to the Mohonk, but this design would also work in a variety of different yarns. Feel free to ask about any substitutes you have in mind in my BabyCocktails Ravelry group -
And thank you bristolivy for putting up with me as a model and taking time out of a relaxing lakehouse weekend to photograph this for me! xoxoxo
