> Armored
Armored
This convertible garment is armored with several woolly pleats. The curved shape is made with two identical halves that each begin at the armhole and increase to the center back. Garter stitch short rows are accompanied by stockinette stitch welts so most of the garment consists of knit stitches except for one purl round in each short row section. Select a main color for the color B garter stitch and four accent colors for the welts. Imagine choosing a rainbow of colors or try a simpler two-color version. The resulting garment shape is a fun and easy thow-on layer that you can also wear upside down.
Sizes
One Size.
Different sizes can be achieved by knitting more or less short row repeats and trying on the piece as you knit. Smaller repeats could result in a more cropped shrug type of garment and more repeats will create a larger drapey cardigan/wrap.
Finished Measurements
20” / 51cm from center back to armhole edge, 23” / 58cm armhole circumference, 27” / 69cm long from shoulder to longest bottom point. Measurements taken after blocking.

Magic loop method is used at the beginning until the circumference is large enough to spread the stitches onto the whole needle.

1 stitch marker, tapestry needle
Gauge
16 sts & 28 rows = 4” / 10cm in garter stitch
Pattern Note
You can try on the piece as you knit to see if the sample size is the right size for you. After working several short row sections, you can place sts onto waste yarn or multiple circular needles to reveal the whole circumference. Try it on with the beginning of the rnd or the middle of the rnd on your shoulder. The live sts should hit the middle of your back. If you are happy with the size before finishing all the written short row sections, then skip to FINISHING instructions early. If you need a larger size, there are instructions after Section 8 on how to continue working the short row sections and welts.
